SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol (over port 443) and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. It also provides a secure communications channel for email, messaging and digital signing when installed to those services.
All TurnKey SSL certificates are fully trusted by all devices and browsers; however, each certificate type will contain a different amount of information about the organization you are connecting to and therefore be trusted accordingly by your users. For example, an EV certificate will contain the most amount of verified information and display the "green bar" in the browser and is universally considered to be the highest trusted certificate available. An AlphaSSL on the other hand will simply display that the domain has been verified prior to the certificate being issued and nothing more. It is still a trusted, albeit basic certificate.
All TurnKey SSL certificates are fully trusted by all devices and browsers and will display the padlock symbol in the browser. The purchase of an ExtendedSSL is required to obtain the "green bar" in the browser.
SSL Secure Site Seals enable your website visitors to know you have invested in their safety and indicate that you provide secure transactions and data. Encourage your customers to complete transactions knowing any information shared is within a secure environment and authenticated by a trusted Certificate Authority. You can get your site seal here.
Depending on which level of certificate you purchase will determine how much verified information will appear within your certificate. An AlphaSSL will contain only the verified country and domain name of the organization where as each succeeding certificate level will contain additional information. An ExtendedSSL will contain the most complete details including the organization's legal name, address and contact information. These details are fully vetted and is what makes an EV certificate the most trusted certificate in the industry.
Depending on which level and type of certificate you purchase will determine how long it takes to receive your certificate. For OneClick SSL's, once the order is approved, it will be provisioned and you will receive the voucher code via email within moments. From there you need to only place the code into the OneClick installer on your site and moments later your certificate will be installed. Standard and Wildcard SSL's use the normal method of CSR generation, submission and approval. Once the order is approved you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete the configuration of the certificate including CSR generation, submission and picking the approval email address. Once approved, you are emailed your certificate and are able to install it in the traditional manner. We do offer installation assistance at the point of sale to help customers with this process. OrganizationSSL and ExtendedSSL take a few business days as they require the interface between the purchaser and Globalsign to perform vetting of the business ordering the SSL. Once the order is approved is typically takes 1 - 5 business days however this time frame can be reduced if paperwork is returned to Globalsign quickly.
AlphaSSL and DomainSSL are vetted via the traditional email approval process which confirms that the purchaser has access to the registered contact address for the domain set at the domains registrar. OrganizationSSL and ExtendedSSL require paperwork and phone verifications by the Globalsign vetting team to perform all the necessary checks for the ordering organization.
Effective August 31, 2020 the maximum validity for all newly issued TLS certs will be 13 months (397 days).
GlobalSign (The Certificate Authority) makes material efforts to assure its customers and business partners of the reliability and integrity of its public certification services through trustworthy procedures. Through a policy that GlobalSign has with a leading worldwide insurance company it extends to subscribers and relying parties additional safeguards against certain eventualities that might occur in using digital certificates as explained in the GlobalSign Warranty Policy.
In order to improve the security of Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates, Google Chrome requires Certificate Transparency (CT) for all EV SSL Certificates issued after December 31, 2014. Certificates not enabled for CT will no longer display the green address bar in Chrome starting in February 2015. To support this initiative and to ensure the best browsing experience for your customers, we will be posting all previously issued publicly visible EV SSL Certificates to qualified CT logs during December 2014 in order to have them added to the Google CT whitelist. Starting no later than December 31, 2014, all TurnKey SSL EV SSL Certificates will be published to CT logs during issuance. Publishing EV SSL Certificates to the CT logs and including Signed Certificate Timestamps (SCTs) in them will ensure that your customers websites will continue to display the green address bar in Chrome.
Multi-domain also referred commonly as SAN Certificates utilize Subject Alternative Names (SANs) to to secure up to 100 different domain names, sub-domains, and public IP addresses using only one SSL Certificate and requiring only one IP to host the Certificate. While Multi-Domain SSLs were originally developed for Unified Communications applications, it can benefit anyone looking for the simplicity of consolidating many domain names into a single SSL Certificate and single IP address.
All certificates are signed using SHA-256 encryption with 2048-bit RSA keys.
Wildcard certificates are using to protect all sub-domains "domain + 1" level sub-domains. For example, a wildcard AlphaSSL for "domain.com" could be used to protect the following:
